“Phthalates” is not a sexy term, but if you want to have a robust and healthy sex life, these chemicals are something you need to know about.
Phthalates are chemicals used as plasticizers, meaning they’re employed to make rubber and plastic more flexible and durable.
The problem is, phthalates are very prone to leaching. That means they can be absorbed into the skin after an item containing phthalates has been touched, and tend to stay in the body for quite some time.
Here’s the problem: There is a growing body of evidence that phthalates can harm your reproductive system, and might have a negative impact on children’s developing bodies.
We mention this because phthalates are often used in inexpensive sex toys. That means if you use a sex toy containing phthalates, you’re at risk for absorbing phthalates exactly where you don’t want them.
Now, to be clear, the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control are wary of phthalates, but haven’t out-and-out warned against them.
Even so, it could be argued that there’s enough evidence out there to decided you just don’t want phthalates anywhere near your body. To that end, you should make sure that your sex toys are phthalate-free. You might have to do a little work to find such items (if it doesn’t say “phthalate-free,” assume it isn’t), but it’s probably worth the extra work.
