Red is the Magic Color for Sexual Attraction.
A new study published by the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology continues to support the mounting evidence that red, whether worn or used as a backdrop, is a very sexy color. In fact, it’s so sexy, that it may be a biological trigger for sex. Previous studies have shown that men sit closer to, spend more money on, and are more interested in dating and having sexual relations with a woman wearing red clothing.
The study, conducted by two psychologists, Sascha Schwarz and Marie Singer from the Technische Universität Dortmund, and the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Germany, found that men were more sexually attracted to young women in front of a red background than to the same subjects in front of a white background.
They conducted the same experiment with older women and found that the background color had little effect on the sexual attractiveness of the older subjects. The reasoning is that the color red is a cue to the fertile stage of a woman’s cycle. The older subjects were nearing menopause, so the the fertile cue was no longer valid.
The psychologists concluded that this attraction, which is referred to as the “red effect”, was an automatic, unconscious response rather than a perceptive, cultural one. This argument was reinforced by another study, in which a similar experiment was performed on a small society in Burkino Fresco, Africa. In this society, red is actually a color connoting sickness and death.
The results of the study also indicated that the link between sexual attraction and the color read is a global and biological phenomenon.
